African youth are facing tremendous challenges that limit their potentials as individuals and collectively. The United Nations has set aside the 12th of August every year to focus on the youth, the critical and global challenges that they face and opportunities to realize their potentials.

In partnership with the United Nations information Centre Lagos and other stakeholders we organize annual events on the 12th of August to commemorate the United Nations International Youth Day to heighten awareness on global issues affecting the youth, celebrate the contributions of young people and empower them to do more towards improving themselves and society at large.

Over the last four years of celebrating this event we have reached out to over 2,830 youth participants directly.

Gender Equality | Ending Violence against Women and Girls | Advocacy

HeForShe is a solidarity campaign for gender equality initiated by United Nations Women. S.M.I.L.E in partnership with the United Nations Information Centre, Lagos and the Lagos State Ministry of Education, organized an event to promote awareness among students, especially male students on the detrimental effect of discrimination and violence against women and the girl child, encouraging all boys and men to speak out in support of women and recommit to respecting, protecting, promoting the development and empowerment of women and girls.

HeForShe is a solidarity campaign for gender equality initiated by United Nations Women. S.M.I.L.E in partnership with the United Nations Information Centre, Lagos and the Lagos State Ministry of Education, organized an event to promote awareness among students especially male students, on the detrimental effect of discrimination and violence against women and the girl child, encouraging all boys and men to speak out in support of women because violence against women is violation of human rights and to recommit themselves to respecting, protecting, promoting the development and empowerment of women and girls.

THE IMPACT

Over 830 people comprising of students, teachers, parents, school administrators and government officials were present at the event which promoted a global shift in thinking, where everyone especially men and boys embrace a new HeforShe mindset. The event ended with a commitment from male participants, to become agents of change in championing the cause for ending discrimination and violence against, women and the girl child in our society.

TEDxPlaceDesNation

Social Impact | Transforming Lives | Leading Innovation

S.M.I.L.E had the rare privilege of partnering with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Lagos to host the only viewing party in Africa, for the TEDxPlaceDeNation global event on the 11th February, 2016 at the S.M.I.L.E Resource Centre. The theme for the event: ‘Transforming Lives’ featured 11 TEDx talks and 2 musical performances. It provided an opportunity for organizations in Nigeria’s social sector, to get a global perspective of how others are making a difference through various causes all over the world.
